A 53-year-old woman from Berea, Kentucky was killed in a Madison County accident late last month. The two-vehicle crash was reported around 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday October 29, 2013. The accident allegedly occurred on Battlefield Memorial Parkway just north of KY-1016 in Madison County.
According to reports of the accident, 29-year-old Russell Willey was driving a Jeep that crossed the center line of Battlefield Memorial Parkway and collided head on with a pickup truck driven by 53-year-old Evelyn Applegate. Ms. Applegate was transported to Baptist Health Hospital in Richmond where she was reportedly pronounced dead. Mr. Willey was taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center with what were described as serious injuries. There were no passengers in either car at the time of the crash and no other injuries that were reported.
Road conditions were reported to be foggy at the time of the accident, though the police have not yet indicated whether the fog was a factor in this crash. A Kentucky State Police reconstruction team was investigating at the scene of the accident in the hours following the crash.
In 2011, head on collisions made up just 1.9% of all Kentucky accidents that occurred but accounted for just over 33% of all fatal accidents and Madison County had a total of 13 fatal accidents in 2011 that resulted in the loss of 15 lives.
